about

In the wake of the Grenfell Tower fire, which we marked with our song ‘Grenfell’, calling for those responsible to be held accountable, our lead singer Andy Worthington, who had already spent several years photographing and writing about the neglect of social housing, the demonisation of social tenants and the cynical destruction of council estates subjected to “managed decline” by their landlords, became, as he describes it, “truly radicalised.”

Andy became involved in housing campaigns, narrated a documentary film about the assault on social housing (‘Concrete Soldiers UK’), and, as well as writing ‘Grenfell’, wrote ‘Affordable’, a furious punky assault on the hypocrisy of the housing development industry, and of complicit politicians in the summer of 2018, as he became increasingly involved in a campaign to save a community garden in Deptford from an inappropriate housing development.

Recorded in December 2019, ‘Affordable’ was initially released as an online single in March 2020.

lyrics

Affordable (Andy Worthington)

A spectre haunts our streets of social cleansing and estate demolition
Our leaders think we’re soft in the head when they say there is no other solution
To a housing crisis caused by greed and their appetite for class destruction
It’s clear that there’s a serious need for a massive social homebuilding programme

Chorus
When they say affordable it doesn’t mean affordable
Regeneration means they want to knock your house down
There’s nothing faintly laudable about calling things affordable
When you need a household income of 70 or 80 grand
It’s time to make a stand, take back our common land
It’s time to make a - yeah, it’s time to make a stand good god y’all

Verse (repeat)

Chorus (repeat)
